Since foreign nations who want to study in Germany have little knowledge of the German education system, it is difficult even to apply for a place in German universities. Foreign high school graduates with national Certificate must first complete a preparatory course called studienkolleg before being accepted to a bachelor’s degree programme at a German University. In other words, they will only be permitted to study at a German university after completing a foundation course at a studienkolleg.
But, In English, what exactly is Studienkolleg? Is it the only way to get into your dream university? Let us examine

What is Studienkolleg?
Studienkolleg in Germany is a preparatory programme that non -EU students, particularly those from third world countries who do not have international school qualifications, must attend and pass before being admitted to a bachelor’s degree course at a German university.
Graduates with an IB diploma or an A level British qualification meet the German university entry criteria known as Abitur, and thus qualify to apply directly for a bachelor’s degree programme.
Students from countries such as India who completed a 12-year national board school education are required to attend the studienkollege/foundation course to compensate for the differences in Germany’s 13-year school qualification.
A Studienkolleg’ s preparatory phase lasts two semesters, during which students must complete any one of the following courses, depending on their field of study at a German University.
M-Course: For medical, biological and pharmaceutical degrees
T-Course: For mathematical, Science or technical degrees
W-Course: For business, economics and Social Science degrees
G-Course: For humanity degree or German Studies
S-Course: For language degree
So, these are the preparatory courses that you may need to take before enrolling in an undergraduate programme at a German university with zero tuition fee. Because learning German is required for studying in Germany, all Studienkollegs have included it in their curriculum.
It is important to note that these are regular university courses.
If you want to pursue technical courses at a University of Applied Sciences, you must first complete the following studienkollege courses:
TI-Course: For technical and engineering degrees
WW-Course: For economics and business degrees
GD-Course: For design and art degrees
SW-Course: For social Science degrees
Types of Studienkolleg
Studienkollegs at a University or a University of applied Sciences
If you have successfully passed the final exams at a university studienkolleg, you can study at a university of applied sciences. If you have passed the exams at a studienkolleg connected to a university of applied sciences, you are usually not qualifies to study at a university, but can only study at a university of applied sciences. Graduates of studienkollegs can apply to study in all of Germany
State-run and private Studienkollegs
Besides the differentiation between studienkollegs affiliated with Universities or universities of applied sciences, there is also a difference between private and state-run studienkollegs. State-run studienkollegs are usually tuition fee and their degree is usually valid to study anywhere in Germany. Private studienkolleges often charge tuition and it is important that you find out whether the private studienkolleg you wish or study at even offers a certificate which is valid in all of Germany.
Is Studienkolleg Compulsory?
Since you need to complete 13 years of education before you can pursue a bachelors programme, and countries like India only have 12 years of school education, you will need to go through a studienkolleg.
However, if you complete a Bachelors course in India, you can avoid the requirement of attending a Studienkolleg in order to directly qualify for a bachelor’s degree course.
Another way to avoid Studienkolleg is to achieve and pass a TestAs aptitude test with high marks. However, keep in mind that you can only take the TestAs exam if the target university accepts it-not many universities accept TestAs to avoid attending a Studienkolleg!
A diploma may also help you get direct admission, though most universities do not recognise them and will most likely reject your application.
There may be a very rare opportunity to apply for a bachelor’s degree without attending any studienkolleg, without attending one or two years of degree course in our home country, or even without taking a Test As aptitude test! For more information, contact THIRDWAVE OVERSEAS EDUCATION CONSULTANTS.

CONCLUSION
To pursue a bachelor’s degree directly at a German University, one must have completed their secondary education and obtained an international qualification, such as an IB Diploma or an A Level under the British Curriculum.
The other option is to have a national certificate of higher secondary school education+ at least one year of college/university experience in your home country-you should be able to provide at least the first two semester mark sheets of a degree course.
